As part of the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC), the Kottayam Nature Society and Kottayam Birders Collective organized the North Kuttanad AWC Bird Survey to document and monitor waterbird populations in wetland ecosystems. This survey forms part of an international bird census, aimed at understanding the status and distribution of waterbirds across Asia.
The Sahyadri Nature Club actively participated in this census by conducting a Water Birds Survey in the nearby wetland area Ullasatheeram. The survey was organized by Lekha Miss, who guided the participants throughout the activity and explained the importance of systematic bird observation and data recording.
The survey was conducted on the scheduled day from 4:45 PM to 5:30 PM, a suitable time for observing wetland birds as many species return to feeding and resting areas during the evening hours. Club members carefully observed and identified various waterbird species using visual cues such as size, color, beak shape, movement, and habitat preference. The presence and behaviour of birds were noted without disturbing the natural ecosystem.
