The Workshop on Recycling, led by Shamon P.K., Assistant Director of the Common
Facility Service Centre, focused on raising awareness about recycling and sustainable
waste management. Participants learned about plastic recycling, engineering solutions
for waste reduction, and eco-friendly practices. The session provided valuable insights
and motivated students to promote sustainability within the campus. A total of 42
nature club volunteers actively contributed to the success of the event.
The workshop highlighted the alarming growth of plastic waste, largely from single-use
plastics, and its severe impact on the environment, wildlife, and human health.
Solutions discussed included reducing virgin plastic production, adopting recycled and
eco-friendly alternatives, improving segregation, enforcing bans on single-use plastics,
and using innovations like chemical recycling and waste-to-energy technologies.
However, challenges such as mixed plastic types, contamination, inadequate
infrastructure, and higher costs often hinder effective recycling. A case study on Milma
milk covers illustrated how poor segregation and unclean inputs can disrupt recycling,
underscoring that success depends on proper implementation and shared
responsibility.
